Hello

My Name is Brandon Shorts

I'm a Communications Major at the University of Connecticut

My

Journey

Getting to know my journey

My academic career to date has been quite the roller coaster. I’ve had my ups and downs throughout the years, but I’ve always had the ability to rebound. I started off through the Tolland public school system, then after I graduated high school in 2020, during Covid, I made the decision to go to Manchester Community College. That decision provided me with the opportunity to simplify the start of college academics. After one year I transferred to UConn, with an undeclared major. After a year, I made the decision to declare as a Communications major. Taking Communications classes and working with professors helped me discover the profession I really wanted. That profession being media management and sports marketing. I’ve always had a deep passion for sports, and I can’t see myself working in any profession outside of it.

I plan on applying to many different jobs that are involved within the sports world until I get the opportunity to take a job. Of course, like any human, I have my strengths and weaknesses. I do have tendencies to shield feelings when overly stressed and distance myself. My strengths on the other hand start with passion. When it comes to work, I’m extremely passionate about giving my 110% and committing to my work. I’m also willing to work outside of work. I’m a quick learner and once I get a routine down it becomes a habit of mine. I also pride my ability to lead a team and take accountability for things, I have experience with coaching youth sports and taking accountability instead of setting the blame on people.

My Work Experiences

Abstract Linear Background

Baywood Kennels

This first experience regards my job and journey at Baywood Kennels. I started working at Baywood when I was 16 and worked there for nearly five years. When I first started working at the kennel, I learned how important routine was, and how to get back on routine when something throws you off it. For example, we would let the dogs out and clean in the morning, if there was a big mess you had to take more time out than usual to fix it, therefore over time I was able to adapt and navigate ways of getting back on routine. I also learned a lot about accountability and communication. I was the daycare manager so my day to day was talking to customers and handling their dogs. If one of the dogs got into trouble it was my responsibility to report the news to the owners. These are abilities that can carry with me in a regular and professional aspect, and should benefit me greatly.

Baseball Coach

I coached little league baseball for two years and I learned a tremendous amount from this experience. This will serve as a basis for some of the natural characteristics I have. Coaching little league baseball takes a lot of patience, considering the players are just kids. There are some kids who can develop fast and some that can’t develop as fast, but having the patience and willingness to help both types of kids is what you’re supposed to do as a coach. You also have to portray yourself as a leader and one that the kids can follow/listen to. Being that leader I try to prioritize chemistry as the best way of getting work done and succeeding. In the two years that I coached we made it to back to back championships, falling short in the championship each year. Even though the season ended in some tears from the children, it was a season full of smiles and there was nothing to be upset about. We went on to celebrate our awesome season with ice cream, and there were many relationships created in the entirety of the season. I consider leadership to be my strongest trait, and this was an opportunity for me to display that.

Huskython Dancer

Huskython being a miracle network that helps fundraise money for children with cancer, it was a fundraiser I took very seriously. This event really opened my eyes and made me very thankful for the life I have, and emotionally I couldn’t imagine what these kids have to go through every single day. I’ve learned that a person should do everything they can to help make a difference and make this world a better place. Since becoming a dancer for Huskython I fully believe in this. I want  the world to strive for better, which participating in events like this will do so.
